The first rezonings under the new Comprehensive Plan for Tysons are scheduled for a public hearing at the Fairfax County Planning Commission on September 8. These applications are RZ 2010-PR-014A and 014B, Georgelas Group LLC, which are located near the future Tysons Spring Hill Metro Station. We would like to invite the public to an informational meeting on the rezonings. The meeting will be held at the Vienna Town Hall, 127 Center Street South, on Thursday, September 1 at 7:30 pm. The applicant and Fairfax County staff will be on hand to review the rezoning proposals and to answer questions. The staff report for the applications will be available on the county website.

It would be appreciated if you would distribute this information to your association members to the widest extent possible.

EVERY TIME IT RAINS, RUNOFF CARRIES LITTER, OIL, GRASS, PESTICIDIDES, PET WASTES, FERILIZERS AND HERBICIDES INTO THE STORM DRAINS WHICH FLOW INTO OUR STREAMS, ACCOTINK CREEK AND THEN ULTIMATLY INTO THE CHEASAPEAKE BAY.

WHO ARE WE? We are members of Cub Scout Pack 1132, Stenwood Elementary School, working on our Cub Scout World Conservation Award. We are going around labeling storm drains in the Dunn Loring Woods Community (DLWC) reminding our residents not to pollute the Accotink Creek and to prevent people from dumping.

WHEN? We are planning to go around on May 14, 2011, and our rain date is June 18, 2011.

WHY? It’s important to do this because when people litter, that litter can go down a storm drain. It will eventually end up in the ocean hurting animals and plants, while polluting the beautiful corals and water. When people do litter, it will only add on to the trash that already exists in the oceans.

WHAT is the DLWC Watershed Area? When it rains, water flows to the Accotink Creek, the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay, finally into the Atlantic Ocean which then further spreads to all the oceans throughout the world.

WHERE are the storm drains located? There are drains located at each end of the street and several in between. We have set our goal at covering the storm drains within the DLWC, well over 100.

WHAT CAN YOU DOTO HELP IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE BAY? HERE ARE FIVE THINGS:

1. Replace some of the grass with ground cover; e.g., shrubs, trees or other plants native to our area.

2. Sweep, do not wash, fertilizer or soil off driveways and walkways. Try to limit the use of fertilizers.

3. Dispose of pet waste properly by picking it up with a means which will allow throwing it away in the trash or other proper disposing method.

4. Donate your old usable paint to a school, community center, etc.

5. Collect and dispose of used motor oil, antifreeze, and other hazardous fluids at the Fairfax County Reclamation Center.

Always report any storm drain dumping to the Hazardous Materials Division of the Fairfax Fire Department, 703-246-4386.

This project has been approved by the Dunn Loring Woods Civic Association, Fairfax County, the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD), and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Mill Creek Residential Trust (MCRT) has scheduled a combined meeting for the following community groups:

· Dunn Loring Woods Civic Association

· Dunn Loring Improvement Association

· Dunn Loring Gardens Civic Association

· Dunn Loring Highlands Homeowners Association

· Providence District Council

The purpose of the meeting is to update community members on the Dunn Loring Metro Redevelopment.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, May 3^rd at 7:30 pm at the Courtyard Marriott - Dunn Loring at 2722 Gallows Road, Vienna, VA.

Idlwood Bridge is now open

IDYLWOOD BRIDGE RE-OPENED

The Idylwood Bridge, between Interstate 66 and Route 7 south of Tysons Corner, reopened on Friday, March 18. The reconstruction over the Capital Beltway is one of a series of milestones scheduled for the high-occupancy toll lanes project this year. The new two-lane span is slightly wider than the old one to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists.

The annual election of DLWCA officers and board members will take place at the May 17 membership meeting.

Some of the existing officers and board members have diligently served on the board and/or as officers for a number of years and now are planning on stepping aside for personal reasons.

This will result in critical vacancies that must be filled in order for the DLWCA to effectively serve DLW and its residents. Serving as a volunteer in the DLWCA is a rewarding way to contribute to your community and make a difference, and it doesn’t take a lot of time. Please give participation careful consideration and contact any of the board members, officers or committee leaders listed in your DLWCA directory for information on positions that may suit your interests.
